A Fishfinder is a device that tracks schools of fish and is used by professional fishermen and by amateur fisherman. You can install a fixed mount fishfinder or use a portable one. The portable fishfinder can be easily installed on any boat type and then removed when the day is over. The portable fish finder will help make sure that you do not come home from you fishing trip with out catching anything.
When you start to talk about fish finders, you have to go over the have 3 main parts. LCD screen, transducer and a clamping device are the parts to be discussed in the next paragraphs. The first component, LCD display, projects the fish onto a screen. These displays come in two types which include color or grayscale. The second component is the type of clamping device. Make sure you buy one that can attach it in a convenient location so you can see it while you’re trolling. The third component is the transducer. The transducer sends out sonar to detect the movement in the water.
All fish finders work the same way. The LCD screens can vary from model to model. Some come with a color display and some come with a grayscale display. The type of transducer can also vary. When the transducer is placed in the water, it then blasts out a cone shaped sonar signal. A larger cone angle means a wider width of coverage. As cone angle expands, coverage expands. Cone angles in fish finder are different in each model. So make sure you check out each model carefully.
This is how a transducer works. After you place the transducer in the water, the boat will drive slowly and go to the locations where it can detect fish. Fish movement data is process and displayed on the LCD screen. This will show the activity on the sea floor. It will identify where the large schools of fish are located. It sounds simple to me. You drive around, spot the fish and catch them.
In basic terms, a fish finder will use the same technology as in portable GPS like in your car. Some fish finders can locate the fish and tell you exactly where you are so you can find your location again. Different fish finders are for trolling and some work better when you’re in a stationary position. The stationary models give you a more precise reading, of course.
Back to the display screen. Your options are either a colored one or a grayscale one. It will be easier to read if you use a grayscale display screen. The grayscale model will enable you to determine the difference between structures and actual schools of fish. It is very important to pay attention to the different features when it comes to the display screen. You do not want to buy the wrong one.
Frequency capabilities of the fishfinder are another feature to look out for. All of the models vary in this department. The higher priced models have a greater frequency. This provides a better screen resolution. Cone angle is another decision that needs to be made. Fishfinder models are made for shallow depths like in lakes and other models are made for the deep seas.
The pricing of fish finders on the market will vary greatly. It all depends on the features you select. Be on the look out for some big pricing increases as your features go up. Greater horizontal and vertical range will be more expensive. Less features means less cost. Make sure you research the features you want and find out the ones you don’t need. Don’t waste you money on extra features if you don’t need them.

What is the best fish finder for lake fishing? less than $150 and can I even get a good one on that budget.?
no gps just fish depth finder.
Answer
For about $50 more you can get the Eagle FishMark 480 which is an excellent value especially if you are just getting started. It is nonsense to pay a lot more for color and useless add-ons. Check around for prices as quite often you will see specials on them..
Good luck!
