I purchased this rod/reel combo for the convenience of having an outfit that would fit inside my checked baggage when I travel on airlines. The initial performance was good; I used it to catch a dozen or so rainbow trout while fishing in the Donner Lake region of California. The padded bag survived the trip quite well, and storage is more than adequate. The only flaw I encountered was some loosening of the rod sections after several casts. If you don’t pause to push everything in tightly periodically, the rod tip (or even the whole rod) will separate and get flung into the lake with your lure.

I recently purchased a Okuma rod and reel travel pack. I used it a couple of times to make sure it worked ok before my trip. It is a very nice combo that casts easily and has a light enough action that I enjoyed using it to catch small panfish. The 310XE had features I liked. Immediate lock up, no flip back of handle with a strike. However, Thumb-finger grip on handle had lots of play with no visible way of tightening. Shaft through reel (that handle attached to) had a lot of play/looseness. Hence handle had a lot of play and wobble. Bail was extremely stiff and hard to start retrieve–had to grip crank and twist. I put on 4 lb test monofiliment, which is what it is rated for. It didn’t seem to me that it wound evenly. Had to watch back lash and birds nests (this may have been because I was just not used to the feel). After one day of fishing, I returned the reel.

After reading many reviews of various combo reel/rods on Amazon, I selected the Shimano AX2500 6ft 6″,for my 10 yr old son. He/we love it! We fished off the ocean pier in Santa Monica, CA (8 lb line) and he caught a full grown dungeness crab! We now have it lined with 4 lb line to go lake/trout fishing this week too. The reel is very smooth. Warning, when I tried to buy the 5ft 6″ it only comes from Toby’s Toolshed, which is actually Ron’s Hardware. But a computer glitch erases the Shimano AX and turned it into a Maurices’ Sportings Good Rod/Polston. Toby’s/Ron’s returned my money when they were unable to get Fed Ex to pick up the package after a week and a half. I was worried the 6′ 6″ would be too long for a ten yr old, which is why I initially tried the 5′ 6″, but I was wrong. My son had no problem handling the 6′ 6″. Also, Amazon was great when they learned about the mistake. They sent me the 6′ 6″ reel from them directly, 2 day shipping for free in time for Christmas.

My Abu-Garcia 6500-C3 has been going strong for over 15 years now without any problems. It’s just as strong and smooth as the day I bought it.

The reel is built with quality, durability, and ruggedness in mind. Handling it lets you know that you’re holding a reel that won’t let you down. I’ve winched in some huge channel cats on this reel without any problems. It handles everything from light monofilament to heavy braids with equal ease. Casting is smooth and trouble free so long as you do your part, and retrieval is just as smooth.

The only area of improvement that the reel could use is to upgrade the drag discs. Though the drag is fairly smooth, it could use some extra smoothing out and more hold when cranked all the way down. This is not a big deal as upgraded drag discs are readily available, and it’s best to change out the drag washers every year or two anyways.

The 6500C3 is a smooth, strong reel. I have owned several Penns in the past, but this is my first Abu in the levelwind area. I will not likely purchase anything else in the near future. It is a workhorse of a reel on big catfish.

This reel, Stradic 1000f1, is a little gem. It is well built and smooth operating. The first fish I took (and released) on it was a 27 inch striped bass on an ultra light rod. Good fun, and the reel performed flawlessly. The only comment I might make is the spool capacity. A 36 inch bass might have taken my line. Most fishermen will use it for lighter fish, so no problem. You will love it.
